DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Facilities

The department has well established laboratories required for undergraduate program. The laboratories are equipped with complete set of latest equipment and tools, which caters to the need of the undergraduate students. At present, Department of Mechanical Engineering possesses the following laboratories for UG programme.

  • Mechanical Workshop
  • Fluid Mechanics Lab
  • Strength of Materials Lab
  • Hydraulic Machines Lab
  • Computational Methods lab
  • CAD/CAM Lab

Mechanical Workshop

The Basic Mechanical Workshop helps the students to get in touch with the conventional way of production in mechanical engineering. They are given a chance to have hands on experience in carpentry, fitting, foundry, welding and sheet metal operation. The students get knowledge in the conventional methods by doing the exercises on their own. The workshop is fully equipped with modern machines, tools, equipments and measuring instruments.

Fluid Mechanics Lab

The subject fluid mechanics is one of the core sectors in the mechanical engineering field fm-1dealing with the fluid properties, type of flow, and the governing equations of the behavior of fluid.  The students are given exposure to the various theory portions covered in the syllabus by the experiments arranged in the Laboratory. This Lab is intended to make the students aware of the all the aspects which comes under the fluid flow. The experiments include flow measurement, practical applications of the basic principles of fluid mechanics and the study of major tools used.

The Major equipment includes:

  • Venturimeter &Orifice meter
  • Orifice & Mouth piece
  • Reynolds’s Apparatus
  • Notches (V & Rectangular type)
  • Metacentric Height Apparatusfm-2
  • Bernoulli’s Theorem Apparatus
  • Losses Determination Apparatus
  • Free & Forced Vortex Apparatus
  • Flow Visualization Apparatus

Strength of Materials Lab

This laboratory, containing different materials testing machines, is used to introduce students to various material properties such as strength, toughness, hardness through actual testing of specimens. The lab also provides certification services for various firms around the college, in testing specimen.sm

The Major equipment includes:

  • Universal Testing Machine
  • Spring Testing Machine
  • Torsion Testing Machine
  • Vickers Hardness Tester
  • Impact Testing Machine
  • Rockwell Hardness Tester
  • Brinell Hardness Tester
  • Compression Testing Machine
  • Concrete Mixer

Hydraulic Machines Lab

The main activities of the Laboratory for Hydraulic Machines are teaching, research and service in the field of hydrodynamics of rotating machines such as hydraulic turbines, pumps, etc. Both theoretical and experimental aspects are investigated with a particular emphasis on the industrial applications such as the design, the installation and the operation of hydraulic machines. Measurements of critical Performance parameters like efficiency, flow rate etc. of various hydraulic machines such as turbines, pumps are also measured in this lab. A separate section is devoted to display cut models of different components of pumps and turbines.Hydraulic

The Major equipment includes:

  • Cut models of pumps and turbines
  • Pelton Wheel Test Rig
  • Kaplan Turbine
  • Francis Turbine
  • Centrifugal Pump Test Rig
  • Reciprocating Pump
  • Gear Pump
  • Plunger Pump
  • Hydraulic Ram
  • Subsonic Wind Tunnel
  • Impact of jets apparatus

Computational Methods lab

The lab has altogether 22 numbers of desktops for the smooth conduction of computational methods laboratory. Solutions for complex numerical problems are found through programming the numerical problems in C language.

CAD/CAM lab

The lab has altogether 20 numbers of desktops with specification required for running CAD software’s. 2D drafting, Solid modeling and computational analysis are done with latest software’s like AutoCAD 2014, Inventor and ANSYS.
